If you’ve never tried ground cherries, you’re in for a really treat! These sweet fruits are related to tomatoes. Marble-sized fruits grow abundantly on bushy, long-branched plants. Fruits and a papery shell, similar to a tomatillo, and will drop from the branches and turn golden when ripe. Aunt Molly has a tropical flavor, that reminiscent of pineapple. They’re great added to salsa for a sweet note, that is if you don’t snack on them all first.
I first came across ground cherries while farming in Nova Scotia in 2011. They were very popular at Farmers’ Markets there and they were the favorite snack for kids shopping with their parents!!
